Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or BJJ, is one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world, this no-nonsense approach to submission wrestling is widely gaining popularity as one of the most effective self defence systems available. With origins in traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu and Judo, BJJ was developed and refined in Rio de Janeiro by various Brazilians after its introduction by Japanese emigrants around the start of the 20th Century. Most famous of the Jiu Jitsu pioneers in Brazil were the Gracie Family and their cousins the Machados.

There are two types of training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, one is done wearing a martial arts uniform known as a Gi and the other is done wearing shorts and a rash vest (this is called "No Gi"). Uniforms can be purchased from Derwent Valley Martial Arts, however just like all clothing there are many brands and styles available for purchase locally and online. We also have patch kits for sale so that you can celebrate your team by showing your club colours.

Being primarily a grappling art Brazilian Jiu Jitsu doesn’t employ punching and kicking techniques. However, from time to time we use striking techniques in our training so that we can learn to defend against these techniques and apply Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in a realistic environment. In short one can’t learn to be protected from strikes without experiencing strikes.

There is a competition element of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which we encourage our students to try, however it is only one facet of the art. Some people love competing and others do not. There is no compulsion to compete and you will not be judged on your decision. Our head coach, Gerry Young is a 2nd degree Black Belt in BJJ and is one of the most experienced coaches in Tasmania. Gerry is also the owner and head coach of Hobart Martial Arts Academy where our students are also welcome to train.
