Our kid’s classes are designed to develop and challenge our students. We believe that Martial Arts are a really important way for our kids to build character. Through training in our classes, kids will learn to defend themselves, will gain confidence and will develop increased strength and coordination. Our kids classes start from 4 years old and are taught in a "Gi" or martial arts uniform, which can be purchased from Derwent Valley Martial Arts. Students can wear comfortable, loose clothing while they are trying out classes.

Our classes have a comprehensive testing syllabus, which includes; self defence techniques, safe falling and rolling, take-downs, coordination and anti-bullying strategies. Promotions are based on a combination of the student's attendance, class behaviour, participation and skill development. Regular attendance and practice are the best pathways to improvement. Our kids class is taught by Head Coach, Gerry Young (BJJ Black Belt) and Paul Cairns (Blue Belt). All of our coaches have a wealth of experience working with kids and hold Working with Vulnerable Persons permits.

The Head Coach of Derwent Valley Martial Arts is Gerry Young, a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and one of the most experienced coaches in Tasmania. Derwent Valley Martial Arts is affiliated with Stefanutti Jiu Jitsu under the Head Coach Thiago Stefanutti, a 4th degree Black Belt from Brazil. Members are offered the opportunity to regularly train with Thiago.

Derwent Valley Martial Arts also has a sister gym, Hobart Martial Arts Academy, where members are also welcome to train. We are proud to bring our excellent coaching and atmosphere to allow students to train Martial Arts in the Derwent Valley.
